In-Wall vs Surface TV Cable Concealment in Vancouver

Hidden Wires vs Cable Covers: Which is Right for You?

Nothing distracts from a newly mounted television faster than a bundle of black power, HDMI, and optical audio cords hanging down the wall. Choosing between routing cables inside the wall cavity or using a surface raceway depends on your wall construction, BC electrical safety rules, and whether you own or rent.

1. In-Wall Cable Concealment: What Is Allowed Inside a Wall Cavity?

When there is an open wood-stud or steel-stud cavity without horizontal fireblocking or solid masonry, low-voltage signal cables (such as HDMI, Ethernet, and optical audio) can often be routed vertically between a brush plate behind the TV and a pass-through plate behind the media console.

Important electrical safety rule: Standard flexible TV power cords are not permitted to be fished directly inside a wall cavity. Concealing power behind a TV requires either an existing recessed outlet behind the bracket, a listed in-wall power kit used within its certification and local rules, or a new receptacle installed by a licensed electrician where regulated electrical work is required.

2. Paintable Surface Cable Covers (Raceways)

In many Vancouver properties, cutting into the wall cavity is either physically impossible or restricted:

  • Solid Poured Concrete & Brick Walls: Common on high-rise condo party walls and loft exterior walls where there is no hollow cavity behind the surface.
  • Tiled or Stone Fireplace Surrounds: Where channeling behind finished masonry or tile is impractical.
  • Rental Apartments & Strict Strata Walls: Where tenants want a clean vertical channel without cutting drywall openings.

A low-profile, paintable PVC cable raceway adheres neatly along the vertical centerline below the TV and can be painted to match your wall color.
