TV Mounting Height: Viewing Angle & Cable Planning

Mounting a television at the right height is the difference between a comfortable home theatre and chronic neck strain. One of the most common mistakes homeowners make is hanging a television like a piece of standing-eye-level artwork rather than aligning it with seated eye height.

1. The Seated Eye-Level Baseline (~42 Inches to Center)

On a standard living room sofa, an adult's eyes typically sit 40 to 44 inches above the floor. For relaxed viewing, the horizontal center of the TV screen should sit at or slightly below that seated eye line:

• 55-inch TV (~27" tall): With the screen center at 42 inches, the bottom edge sits roughly 28.5 inches from the floor.
• 65-inch TV (~32" tall): With the screen center at 42 to 44 inches, the bottom edge sits roughly 26 to 28 inches from the floor.
• 75-inch to 85-inch TV (~37" to 42" tall): Larger displays often place the bottom edge 24 to 27 inches above the floor so the top half of the screen does not force viewers to look upward.

2. Adjusting for Media Consoles, Soundbars & Fireplaces

Real rooms require balancing ideal ergonomics with furniture and architecture:

• Soundbar Clearance: Leave 3 to 5 inches between the top of your media console and the bottom of the TV (or more if a top-firing Dolby Atmos soundbar sits beneath the display).
• Bedrooms: Because you watch while reclined against pillows, bedroom TVs are commonly mounted higher (50 to 60 inches to center) using a tilting bracket angled toward the bed.
• Above a Fireplace: Fireplace mantels often require a higher mounting position. Before mounting above a fireplace, verify heat exposure, mantel clearance, wall backing, and use a tilting bracket to angle the screen toward the seating area.

3. Remember VESA Offset When Marking the Wall

Remember that the mounting holes on the back of many OLED and LED TVs sit in the lower third of the chassis—not the geometric center. Always measure the offset between the VESA bracket hooks and the bottom edge of the TV before drilling pilot holes.
