Laptop & Computer Repair Guide: How to Diagnose and Fix the 7 Most Common PC and Mac Issues

Whether you rely on your laptop for remote work in downtown Vancouver, running design software in Burnaby, or managing business spreadsheets in Richmond, experiencing sudden computer crashes or hardware failures can bring your productivity to a dead stop.

Fortunately, many common computer problems can be accurately diagnosed and resolved once you know what symptoms to look for. This guide outlines seven common troubleshooting paths and the points where device-specific diagnostics or repair support may be needed.

1. Overheating, Blasting Fans & Thermal Throttling

If your laptop bottom feels burning hot and the internal cooling fan sounds like a jet engine taking off, your CPU and GPU are likely experiencing severe thermal throttling. Over time, microscopic dust and pet hair pack against the heatsink fins, blocking exhaust airflow.

  • Quick Fix: Use short bursts of compressed air through the side and bottom exhaust vents while the machine is powered off.
  • Hardware Overhaul: On some serviceable models, degraded thermal-interface material can contribute to poor cooling. Repasting is not a universal maintenance interval or guaranteed temperature fix; it should be considered only after model-specific inspection and diagnostics.

2. Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) & macOS Kernel Panics

A sudden Blue Screen with cryptic error codes like CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED, DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION, or MEMORY_MANAGEMENT usually points to corrupted device drivers or failing RAM memory modules.

  1. Boot into Safe Mode to isolate background startup services.
  2. Run the built-in Windows Memory Diagnostic tool (mdsched.exe) or Apple Diagnostics (hold 'D' at startup).
  3. Update your GPU display drivers cleanly using Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU).

3. Laptop Won't Turn On or Boots to a Black Screen

If power LEDs light up but the display remains pitch black, perform a hard residual power drain (flea power reset):

  • Disconnect the AC charging adapter and all USB peripherals.
  • Hold down the physical power button continuously for 30 full seconds.
  • Connect an external HDMI monitor to determine if the issue is a failing laptop LCD screen or a motherboard graphics failure.

⚠️ BATTERY SWELLING EMERGENCY WARNING

If your laptop trackpad begins lifting, the spacebar feels stiff, or the bottom casing bulges, your Lithium-Ion battery is swollen. Disconnect the charger immediately, stop using the laptop, and book a professional battery replacement to prevent fire hazards.

4. Liquid Spill Emergency First-Aid Protocol

If coffee, water, or tea spills onto your keyboard:

  1. Immediately press and hold the power button to force shut down—do not click "Start > Shut down".
  2. Unplug the power cable immediately.
  3. Invert the laptop into a "tent shape" (V-shape upside down) over a clean towel to prevent liquid from dripping into the motherboard circuitry.
  4. Never place the laptop in a bag of rice (rice starch accelerates corrosion and clogs fans). Contact a qualified IT repair technician for ultrasonic board cleaning before attempting to power it back on.

5. Persistent Malware, Browser Hijackers & Adware

If your web browser opens unwanted search tabs or your antivirus constantly alerts you to suspicious PowerShell scripts, run an offline bootable scan using Malwarebytes and remove unauthorized browser extensions.
