Smart Home Setup: Switch, Lock & Thermostat Checks
Walking into a warmly lit hallway, controlling your thermostat from work, or granting entry access to family members using a smartphone code—smart home automation isn't sci-fi anymore. It's practical, energy-efficient, and easy to set up!
1. Smart Wi-Fi Light Switches (Kasa, Lutron Caséta)
Instead of replacing every individual light bulb with expensive smart bulbs, upgrading wall switches controls the entire light fixture (and all bulbs) in one place.
Crucial Check: Most smart switches require a Neutral Wire (white wire bundle inside the electrical box) to provide constant power to the Wi-Fi chip. If your home was built before 1985, electrical testing or wiring alterations should follow the applicable BC permit and qualification requirements.
2. Keyless Smart Door Locks (Schlage, Yale, August)
Never worry about losing your house keys or locking yourself out on a rainy day again. Modern keyless deadbolts feature illuminated keypads, fingerprint sensors, and encrypted smartphone app controls.
3. Smart Thermostats (Ecobee & Google Nest)
Smart thermostats can provide scheduling and remote-control features, but energy savings depend on the building, heating system, settings and occupant behaviour. Confirm thermostat compatibility with the existing HVAC and wiring before installation.
